Immigration Benefits Go Electronic
[05/31/2012]

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has launched the first phase of its electronic immigration benefits system, known as USCIS ELIS. The system will make filing for immigration benefits faster and easier.

Historically, USCIS customers — an estimated 6 million to 7 million each year — have had to apply for most benefits by mail. With USCIS ELIS, individuals can establish an account and apply online to extend or change their nonimmigrant status for certain visa types. Eligible individuals include foreign citizens who travel to the United States temporarily to study, conduct business, receive medical treatment or visit on vacation.

Benefits of using USCIS ELIS include filing applications and paying fees online, shorter processing times, and the ability to update user profiles, receive notices and respond to requests electronically. The system includes tools to combat fraud and identify national security concerns.

USCIS employees named the USCIS Electronic Immigration System “ELIS” in honor of Ellis Island. From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island served as the primary federal immigration station for new immigrants.
